The last couple of weeks have been lots of fun, very relaxing, and very busy. The week before last my mother came out to visit and we went to several sessions of the San Jose SAP Open professional tennis tournament. We're both fans of James Blake, who played in the tournament, though he only went three rounds. (We saw him in his first and third matches.) That was a lot of fun, plus I took a couple of days off work to have a short, relaxing week.

The "relaxing" part was good, because on Monday last week I got promoted, to Technical Product Manager. Now I'm in charge of the technical strategy across all products in my company, but first I have to spend a lot of time working on our new product that has a big release coming up in about a year. (Why do I need to hurry, when it's not coming out for a year? Because I'm one of the people who defines everything that goes into the product, before anyone else can really start working on it.) Of course, we don't have a replacement for me in my current job, so I'll still be responsible for my existing product. The next couple of months should be very, very busy, and if anyone knows of a good product manager looking for a job, send me a resume.

One of the interesting things I managed to find time for this week was to go to Paxton Gate, a landscaping store that has a lot of natural science goodies in it (taxidermied mice dressed in wedding clothes! a box turtle skeleton! coprilites!), with my friend Tristan, who had pointed me to a similar store when I was in New York City called Maxilla and Mandible. Paxton Gate turns out to be just a few doors down from Borderlands Books, one of my favorite sf bookstores, so I got to introduce Tristan to a new cool place, too.

Congrats!
I think Paxton Gate was the inspiration for the weird store in Christopher Moore's A Dirty Job.

Oh you ARE having fun!

Congrats on the promotion. I'm not surprised they've figured out that you have the talents they need. Yay you!

BTW:
There is a great paleontology collection at UC Berkeley you guys might enjoy also. I loved it. They have skulls of bears and saber tooth tigers and all kinds of smaller critters as well!

I thought about that, since it has skeletons of squirrels dressed in Renaissance dresses.

Nope, we didn't see Ripley.
