How I spent my weekend
May. 10th, 2004 07:59 pmThis past weekend I drove down to Pasadena for the christening of Michael-san and Barbara's baby daughter, Morgan. I haven't seen either of them since their wedding two and a half years ago, and while Barbara hasn't changed, even with the pregnancy, Michael has. He has always claimed that the way to avoid aging and death is to never do three things: buy a house, get married, and have children. Now he's done all three, and he's gained about thirty pounds, is starting to go grey, and actually looks his age (mid-forties). This has more to do with injuring his leg and being unable to exercise the way he used to, but still. I'm not ready for my friends to age, because next thing you know I'll be aging, and that just can't happen.
Morgan is absolutely beautiful, and very well behaved. She is a happy, smiling little thing, with her father's green eyes. Both her parents seem to be handling parenthood quite well. She was adorable in her little white christening dress, and though she fussed just a little bit before the ceremony (probably due to Barbara having Indian food the night before), she calmed right down when the water was poured on her head (she loves baths). Michael was baptised as well, and the holy water didn't sear his head, so that was nice.
I didn't get to go to the reception, because I had given our friend Gavin a ride to the christening, and during the ride to the church he complained of an upset stomach. By the end of the service he had painful stomach cramps and was faint and dizzy, so I took him to the emergency room. It turns out that he was dangerously dehydrated from an internal infection that had suddenly stuck, and I got him to the hospital in time, but he was in danger of renal failure. After a couple of bags of intravenous saline and some pain medication, he was able to go home (and spend the evening drinking Pedialyte), though, and I called him today and he was fine. Whew.
After that I met up with Michael and Barbara and their families back in the hotel lounge, so I got some socializing and some dinner after all. Michael's brother James and his wife Allison were there, and it turns out James is also a big "Master and Commander" fan, and has read all but the last book, so we had a nice conversation. And then to bed, and sleep.
Sunday I spent at the Huntington with
acanthusleaf, strolling the grounds and eating tea sandwiches. That was very relaxing. Then I drove home. And slept.
