I have no life, but it's fun

I'm really enjoying my new job, even though I work way, way too much. My morning starts with customers calling and emailing me with problems, and I spend the rest of the morning and the afternoon until about 2:00 putting out fires. (Two o'clock is when most of our East Coast customers go home for the day.) I spend the rest of the afternoon finishing the last of the fires, and by the time the end of the work day rolls around I've got things calmed down enough for me to start on any long term projects. Sigh. Add to that that this week two customers are upgrading, so we're letting them call tech support after hours, and I have no life. To top it off, my boss left today for a three week vacation in Italy with his family.

In the part of my life that's fun, I had two people come over for scribe night last night -- Maria, who is starting work on another of her beautiful pieces based on the Book of Kells, and Chiara, a new scribe who I started teaching calligraphy to (Carolingian Miniscule, of course -- a great first hand). Chiara comes from the town in Wisconsin where I started in the SCA, so she filled me in on the doings of some old friends, and also told us fascinating stories about being in the Peace Corps in Africa. I had a great time, and even got so far in my own work as to mix some paint, until I got a tech support call. Sigh. The paint dried in the dish before I could use it.

Tonight I had dinner with an online friend in town for her high school reunion. I took her out to Kabul, an Afghan restaurant that I love, then drove her around her old neighborhood. I had a good time hanging out with her. In one of those ironies in my life, one of my co-workers invited me to come over and hang out with him and some of his friends and play geek board games. It figures that the first time I actually had something besides aikido to do on a Friday night I'd get another invitation. And of course I got a tech support call during dinner.
