The consuming passion
Sep. 18th, 2004 09:14 pmIn the past week, I've gone on a book-buying binge. It started simply enough, by deciding to buy a birthday present, and since all of my friends like to read, I went to the giant Barnes and Noble store near my house. And while I was there I needed to check the New Releases section for mysteries and science fiction, oh, and to check to see if a couple of books were out in paper, and since I was going to get the last five Aubrey and Maturin books anyway, well, you get the idea. And today I stopped by the comic book store, because Elizabeth and Edward are into the Teen Titans cartoon (she likes Raven, he likes Beast Boy or whatever he's called), and Elizabeth wants some of "those Teen Titans magazines". And while I was there I needed the latest Straczynski Spider-Man collection, and the last couple of Cerebus phone books (odd to think they really are the last), and, well, you know.
I fully intend to read all of these, but then I fully intend to read the 2000 or so unread books in my bedroom. Since I started the Aubrey and Maturin series early in this year, and I've been read one in that series interleaved with one outside the series, plus a couple of extras, a couple before I started the series, and about five digest magazines, it's safe to say that, at "The Thirteen Gun Salute" (number thirteen in the series), I've read about thirty books so far this year. It's unlikely that I'll read as many as forty by the end of the year. However, I've bought more than forty books this year. I sense a horrible pattern. I'm going to become one of those people who live in a house so full of stuff that there are only thin aisles between stacked stuff, only instead of old newspapers and cats and bottles of urine, my stuff will be books. And I'll be in heaven.
