There are moments in my life where I stop and realize cool things, like when I was in college Latin class and realized the words I was reading were written by Julius (OMG!) Caesar. (OK, probably his scribe, but still.) Or a couple of years ago when Chaz and I were walking along Hadrian's (yes, that Hadrian) Wall. For reals. Well. A few years ago I read all the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey and Maturin books, and loved them. I went so far as to buy the cookbook that gives recipes for all of the meals they ate in the books, that cookbook being titled "Lobscouse and Spotted Dog". And yesterday, with many of our friends, I ate lobscouse and spotted dog. And it was delicious.
One of the cooler things about the lobscouse and spotted dog was that Chaz discovered Saturday morning that Safeway did not sell juniper berries nor indeed suet, but we were not embarrassed by the lack of these ingredients in our offerings, because our friends brought juniper berries and suet in abundance (because we have the coolest friends). It was a lovely day.
(I should note that I have, in fact, eaten spotted dick (the same thing as spotted dog) before, once a Heinz brand canned version and once at probably the worst restaurant in York. Neither came close to the confection of yesterday.)
