1. Why turtles?
When I was five, my Sunday School class pet was a turtle, and I would race over to the aquarium the second story time was over to get the turtle and play with it. I thought they were so cool. When my allergies got so bad that I couldn't have pet cats anymore, I remembered that turtle and decided to get one. I still think they're cool.
2. What do you find most rewarding about studying martial arts?
The incredible coolness of it. You know how the Jedi can kind of twitch and the bad guy will fly across the room? I can do that.
3. You've chatted with a few published authors--who impressed you most in person and why?
I assume you mean the ones that aren't my friends, which leaves out a list of impressive people. Of the rest, I suppose Joe Haldeman fits the bill. He invited Ann and me to have a glass of wine with him and his wife, Gay, at World Fantasy Con a couple of years ago. He was intelligent, witty, and kind, as was Gay. I liked them both quite a bit.
4. What constitutes the perfect home alone night?
I was tempted to say "World of Warcraft", but that's not really alone, since I play online with friends. A perfect night home alone includes quiet time reading or working on projects or watching TV. I need quality alone time to be able to function.
5. Follow up: likewise, what's a great night out?
Anything with a group of great people. The people make the difference. I'm a terrible introvert and have a mild case of social anxiety, so I can't get out as often as I'd like to, but spending time with people I like doing something interesting (which includes just hanging out and talking) is a great night out.
