I got Chaz a lemon tree for Christmas, which [livejournal.com profile] learnteach planted for me in my back yard. Last week the snails found the lemon tree and started eating its leaves. They can do this because the tree is still tiny, and in fact its lower branches touch the ground. [livejournal.com profile] learnteach gave me some copper tape to put around the trunk to keep the snails off, but I knew that I would need to dig the ground away from the branches.

This past week, Dymphna has been running all over the house. I've been meaning to take her out to the turtle run and see if she was ready to lay eggs, but it was pouring down rain all weekend and neither of us wanted to go outside. Tonight I heard a noise and went into the living room to discover she had tried to climb onto the bottom shelf of a bookcase and flipped over. I picked her up and she was obviously pregnant.

So, I went outside into the dark and filled an old plastic box with nice damp soil from under the lemon tree, and put it in the corner of the kitchen with towels around it so she can climb into it. I put her in the box, but I just heard her walking around in the living room so I'll have to put her back. I hope she takes to it, because it would be nice to have baby turtles. And no snails.

OMG! Baby turtles!!

First she has to lay the eggs in the nice damp soil, then G'Kwan has to not eat them.

I love the idea of knowing somebody who hears a turtle walking in her house!

I have hardwood floors or tile on most of my floors, so the shell thumps against it loud enough to hear through the house. The carpeting is quieter, but occasionally I can hear their claws catch in the material. Who said turtles were quiet?

Quiet -- as mice, as cats.

Yet both present most credible simulations of thundering herds of buffalo!
