There's a cat that hangs out in my back yard. She's kind of large, short hair, black and white (the kind I think are called tuxedo cats). She* mostly takes naps, but I see her outside almost every day, several times a day. She's not too skittish, and seems really friendly. I've seen her around since I moved here a couple of years ago. I like her.

Boy, she's going to be so surprised when Mac and Barry get here.

*Cats are females until proven otherwise. Dogs are male. Hey, it's how I was brought up.

Hey, it's how I was brought up.

You weren't brought up by my grandmother, were you? That's what she thought, too.

It must be an old-fashioned way of thinking. My grandparents taught me that way too.
It even shows up in our slang, when you think about it.

No, I think that way because when I was a kid, I had a female cat and my brother had a male dog.

Are there any import regulations for Mac and Barry? Quarantine or suchlike?

Are you going to allow Mac and Barry outside? I'd suggest you not do that for some months after their arrival. Long trips disorient cats, and they might just decide to walk back to Newcastle, not realizing of course that they can't. A number of people I know have lost beloved cats that way.

There may be a quarantine. We'll find out.

We'll keep them indoors at first (for one thing, they're likely going to get here in the rainy season), then add a cat door to the back door.

It's kind of embarrassing, too, because I automatically refer to cats as "she", and their owners will humph "he".

You may be able to avoid quarantine with the right series of immunizations at the right times.

Go here http://www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/BringingAnimalToUs.html for info and note that California may also have rules.

And enjoy the Pouf! Hiss! fest that is coming!
