My mother asked me what I wanted for Christmas, and I told her I wanted some more polo shirts. I like wearing them in the summer, as they have a collar, and (at least the ones I bought eight years ago) fit loosely and comfortably. Mom liked this idea, but asked me to order them for myself and she'd sent me the cost. She suggested an online store, so I went there and ordered three women's polo shirts. The color options were...OK. I order a couple of wine colored shirts, and a bluish one. When they arrived, they were contoured, which meant they didn't fit loosely and comfortably. I decided to send them back.

I went back to the site to see about possibly ordering a size larger, and by accident ended up in the men's polo shirt page. Where they had a choice of very pretty colors, including green(!). I ordered three (green, wine, black), and they got here today. They fit loosely and comfortably, but one thing was also immediately apparent: they were better made. The material was thicker, the stitching tighter. So of course they should cost more than the women's shirts, right? Nope. Five dollars cheaper, plus on sale.

Grr.

and that's modern women's clothing manufacturing in a nutshell. I'm betting the men's polos are machine wash and dry, and that there's a good chance the women's are hang dry or dry flat, because they don't bother preshrinking women's fabrics either.
It's partly due to 'oh, women will just buy new shirts in 6 months because these will be out of style, no sense in making them to last ...' and partly due to unmitigated greed. I really don't like buying clothes these days.

And the men's sizes will be standardized from brand to brand, so you always know how which size fits you.

I always buy men's tee-shirts, for exactly this reason. All this 'fancy' contoring mus be very expenmsive to implement.
