I've been to Cornwall, just not to Penzance. We went to St. Austell so I could meet my in-laws-to-be a few Christmases ago. Still, this time I was promised Pirates.

Chaz and I had planned to go see [livejournal.com profile] aimeric in "Pirates of Penzance" last Sunday, but at the last minute we found out he was scheduled to do a reading and a signing at Borderlands, and then he was leaving for Mexico last Tuesday. That meant I got a ticket for myself for today. Last night, I got an email from the theater telling me about all the roads that were going to be blocked for a big festival in the park across the street from the play. Great.

I didn't want to even attempt to find parking then go walking by myself all the way to the play. I'd probably need my walker, and what if the closest parking was blocks away? Maybe I should just not go. But, I'd seen pics from the play and it looked great, and Jeff and I are friends and I know what a good actor he is, and and and...I left an hour and a half before the play was supposed to start, got close, and discovered that even though the roads were closed, there was tons of parking across the street. No problem.

The play? I've never seen Pirates before, and the plot was very much Gilbert and Sullivan. Lyric Theater, which puts on G&S regularly, had done a solid job. The sets and costumes were very well done, and the orchestra was quite good. Jeff, on the other hand, was amazing. This was *his* part, and he carried it off beautifully. For one thing, he not only sang and danced (more on that later), he actually acted. His body language proclaimed him the very model of a modern Major-General. He sang well, but he also had bits going on with the rest of the cast during the songs. He moved well. I hope to see him in more productions.

As for the dancing, I noticed right away that the choreographry had very much improved over previous Lyric Theater G&S plays. Cordelia Willis did the choreography, and I've mentioned Jeff dancing well, but the men's chorus in particular, both the pirates and the constables, moved well together in clever and fitting ways. Cordelia's mother Connie had come to see the play, and we were next to each other in the line leaving, so we both got to gush about the good dancing. (I also told Connie that I loved her books, but the conversation was really about Cordelia.)

I was in the front row, and the person to my right didn't show up so I was next to an empty seat for the whole show. I pretended it was saved for Chaz. Who dined with the Minister of Culture in Mexico tonight, so I have no sympathy for him missing such a great show.
