Wonderful site. Thanks! There's three of me, and no one with the nom de plume I'm using. I like that.

I'm not rare, but not usual either. One of those people with my nam is my sister in law. Is that funny?

There are even fewer with my formal name. I have to admit I like that.

My husband says this whole thing is a crock.

It says there is only one person with his name. We know there are at least two; the other one is an MD who lives in the western end of our state, and we have received other people's medical bills where (according to our medical insurance carrier) some careless medical transcriptionist has confounded the patient's name and the doctor's name.

Well, it claims there are no others with my last name. I beg to differ. If you Google my last name I barely get a mention, but my DIL is all over the place. (g)

Yes. I must agree that this one is pretty flawed. It showed 0 people with my last name. In addition to me I know or know of at least 12 people with my same last name. Most of them are family members but I know of 2 that are not...and I assume that they have family members with their shared name.

It is. The fine print mentions that they are using their own database. I tried three of my friends from high school who have unusual names, and they don't show up at all.

I read further on some of their subsequent pages.

They state there this is not from a database of actual names. It's based on the US Census figures on the popularity/frequency of names. That means the result you get isn't showing how many people actually have this name, but what the odds are that anyone will have this combination of first and last name based on the Census figures for common and uncommon first and last names.

Thus, I'd venture to say their use of the phrase "How many have your name?" is quite misleading.

A Real Database

If you use this site:

http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/

You can look up how many people with Social Security numbers (which is just about everybody for many decades now) who have passed away HAD your name, first and / or last. It lists everyone who has died.

If you have long-lost friends or relatives, sometimes you can find them, there, too, sadly.

Make sure to use last name first.

There are four dead folk with the name Coke Brown.
