They're needed for all sorts of reasons, and recruitment for this line of work isn't nearly as dishonest as recruitment for the armed services, IMHO. I've actually considered going into some form of ministry several times in my life, but I think it requires that one refrain from giving in even to temptations that are merely PERCEIVED as being a big deal, when, in fact, they might only be useful learning opportunities. I'm afraid that going into the priesthood at a young age might prevent one from experiences that could lead to the ability to identify with all sorts of parishioners, to broaden the scope of one's experience. Wasn't Jesus exposed to every temptation in the book? Not that that's necessarily a great thing, but it can lead to a more rounded view of what others go through.

NPR interviewed a couple of seminarians the other day. What I thought was interesting was their age -- both mid-30's. They both had careers and realized their life was empty without Service.

I've always said that if I could have been a Catholic priest I would have joined long ago. Being a nun just wasn't for me.
