My steampunk outfit

I need a costume for the steampunk convention, and I didn't want to do straight Victorian ladies clothing, so I opted for the Old West look:

http://www.westernemporium.com/store/oldwest_ladies_10.php

I didn't order the guns or pants, but the hat, shirt (in ivory) and vest arrived today. I'm pleased and surprised to find that they actually fit very well, which doesn't always happen when I order clothes. And I look really cool in the hat. :-)

This outfit sparked my imagination, and I now have a steampunk character (Honesty) who lives in the Old West, and am going to be doing a NaNoWriMo story just to see how it goes. I think the West gets ignored too much in sff literature.

Nice, and you DO look good in a hat!

When and where is the steampunk convention?

And you do look great in hats.

Well, you've lived in the West for most of your life, so you're well qualified to write about it. Cool! in short.

ROTFL! You have the hat, shirt and vest, I have the pants and the coat. *vbg* I was planning to pack them as backup in case the fibro acted up and I didn't feel up to wearing a corset. Either way, we have to meet up at the con. I'll buy you a shot of whiskey to help get you into character. ;)

You know, as soon as I saw that picture I thought the outfit would look perfect on you.

Nice outfit! I bet you look great in it. Post pics when you've got it all on?

I sure will.

Karen? Are you "my" Karen?

Squeee!

Sweet! A good pair of goggles and a few bits of brass here and there and you're set!

[identity profile] klwilliams.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's all about the accessories.

Here by way of Sherwood (not the forest--ha ha I'm sure she's heard that a time or two).

Anyway...steampunk convention? Would you mind sharing where? Not for myself, but for two friends working on a steampunk novel. They might already be aware of it, but just in case...

The west, yes! WHen I first started digging into what steampunk was, and saw Wild Wild West on the list (oh Thaddeus! I crush you still!) I nodded my head happily in realization.

The steampunk convention is in Sunnyvale Oct 31 - Nov 2, and the URL is the aptly named http://www.steampunkconvention.com.

I didn't get steampunk until I remembered The Wild, Wild West. That makes it for me.

You probably know that Teresa and I were gaga over Wild Wild West when we were kids.

You looked fabulous. I'm surprised that those were not familiar clothes.
As far as Steampunk in the Wild West, if you want I would be happy to loan you the Deadlands game books, or Dead Man (the weird ass Jim Jarmusch film). I had a dream earlier this month about a Romany and his Chinese adversary which wants to become a story that I think probably takes place in San Francisco during the steamy wildness.

Oh, that sounds like a great story. I'm looking forward to reading it.

I'd love to see Dead Man. It sounds like a lot of fun.

I warn you, it's artsy and has Iggy Pop in drag. But barring that, let me know where it should go. cyranocoyote@yahoo.com
