Starsky and Martin

I saw two movies yesterday, "Grosse Pointe Blank" and "Starsky and Hutch". Both were very funny, but for different reasons. "Grosse Pointe Blank", for the two of you who haven't seen it yet, is a John Cusack movie where he plays a hit man come home for his tenth high school reunion, to see his high school sweetheart, and to kill someone. It's funny (Dan Aykroyd plays a rival hit man), witty, and says something about life and purpose in life. And it's available on DVD.

As for "Starsky and Hutch," let me say up front that when I was in the eighth grade I had pinup posters of Starsky on my wall, taken from the pages of "Tiger Beat." I thought the movie was very funny. It didn't make fun of the TV show so much as have fun with it. In the movie, Starsky is a straight line cop to the point of overkill, while Hutch is an amoral thief (though he's shown to have some redeeming qualities, such as caring for a friend's kid after school). They are assigned to be partners because no one else will work with them, and they stumble across an impending cocaine deal. Highlights (but no spoilers) from the film are:

Ben Stiller clearly studied Paul Michael Glaser's Starsky, as he even runs like him.
Owen Wilson sings David Soul's "Don't Give Up on Us, Baby".
Snoop Dogg does a better Huggy Bear than the original.
Starsky wears the same sweater and the same shoes as he did in the TV show.
David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser have a very nice cameo.

It was a fun show.

Was 'Grosse Point Blank' in the theater, or via netflix? That came out a couple of years ago, right? I wanted to see it, because I like Minnie Driver. And John Cusack.

I've decided that when we're all rich and famous and They make a movie of our lives, that Sandra Bullock can play me, and Minnie Driver can play you. She has naturally curly hair and is tall like you, and very witty. Sandra is sarcastic enough to be me.

Hmm. Diane Keaton is probably too old to play Kath, but some hollywood makeup can, um, make up for that.

Anyway, thanks for the reviews!

I actually own "Grosse Pointe Blank" on DVD, but you can get it from Netflix.

I want Sigourney Weaver to play me.

That's totally weird, because I picked up Grosse Pointe Blank at the library (DVD) over the weekend, and saw it just tonight, too.

And now, there's only one person who hasn't seen it, yet.

I thought it had a good high-concept premise (CIA assassin goes to ten-year high school reunion) but failed on the execution. I thought the Dan Ackroyd subplot detracted from the story; I felt that the movie would have been better had it focused more on the character. Seeing him struggle against former high school bullies or snotty cheerleaders (and trying not to just kill them), for example, would have been more amusing than a more adult assassin.

I thought the Dan Aykroyd character's interaction with John Cusack helped push Cusack to where he ended up at the end of the film, and gave us insight into his personality. Plus, Aykroyd was very funny.

I, on the other hand, went to see "Hidalgo" this week. Yet again, Viggo gets to bond with a horse and have angst in another language. Still, was a pretty good movie.
