One of my company's core beliefs is "play to win", and we take our sports very seriously. Today's sport was cricket. I accepted the Outlook meeting invitation to the game, which, it turns out, meant that I was signing up to play. Since I hadn't intended to play, I showed up late. Fortunately, my team was still batting, and they sent me out holding a bat that resembles nothing so much as a frat's initiation paddle. And lo and behold (the other team was being very kind to me), I hit the ball, and scored a point! The other runner batted next, and I got out because I didn't get to the other side in time, but still, I was amazed that I scored a point at all. In fact, I think everyone (myself included) was amazed that I hit the ball at all.

A large percentage of my company are from India, and it was a lot of fun watching them playing, especially since some of them were quite good. Our company CEO even wore cricket whites and his cricket cap from Oxford (I forgot which college, but the cap was blue and gold). The day was cool and sunny, so it was a great day to be outside. I hope we play cricket again soon.

So cricket can make sense? Every time I've tried to understand it I've gotten a headache. :)

If you think cricket is hard you should try Mornington Crescent!

I'm glad someone is teaching cricket to USians!

But it's a run, not a point ;-)

It took me a while to figure out what an "over" was (and I still may have it wrong), too.

And you were run out, of course!

But that was obviously the other guy's fault... (Always the best way to get out, being run out by one's partner.)

Talk to Tad. Apparently it took living in London for cricket to make sense (and now he's as mad about cricket as he is the Giants....)
