Grating celeriac

[livejournal.com profile] gormflaith, [livejournal.com profile] learnteach, and [livejournal.com profile] acanthusleaf all came over for dinner tonight. I haven't had a real dinner party before, except for making spaghetti for the godchildren. I actually cooked real food and everything. The menu was:

roasted chicken (I didn't cook this; I bought it pre-roasted at the grocery store. I have roasted chickens several times before, though, and I knew I wouldn't have time to do it myself.)
steamed broccoli (dead simple, and fast)
carrot and beet soup (This is the soup recipe I first tried a couple of months ago, and it was delicious this time, too.)
carrot and celeriac slaw (This was absolutely delicious. I got the recipe from the cookbook Chaz got me for Christmas. Yummy.)

In fact, the other first tonight was eating celeriac, aka celery root. I hadn't even seen one before this past weekend, or at least I hadn't recognized it if I had. I grated both the celeriac and the carrots and combined them with mayonnaise, crushed mustard seeds, and lemon juice. Yum.

Plus, it was tons of fun having cool people over to hang out and talk. I'll have to do this again soon.

Sounds like it was a wonderful meal!

I don't much like celery, but I do like celeriac. Boiled and mashed with cream or butter. I've never tried it in a slaw. Sounds lovely. My favourite slaw is just chopped onion, hearty white cabbage (again, chopped small but not grated), flaked almonds and raisins in (Hellmans) mayo. Mmmm.

That sounds delicious.

Dinner parties are so much fun, I love hosting them. :-)

celery root makes a great soup too. And now you can make celeri remoulade.

It's a sad indication of my advancing years that the bits of my diary that used to say 'clubbing!' now say 'dinner party'.

I had no idea that celeriac was celery root. Makes perfect sense, now you mention it.

Brava! And care to share the carrot and celeriac slaw recipe? I'm trying to add more veggies.
