On the train this morning I started the rewrite of the novel I started last summer and took to Milford. I have a much better take on the main character this time, and a better sense of the time. I also realized that even though I'm writing historical fiction of a sort, it's still fiction, so if I stray from reality it doesn't matter so long as I have a good reason (and no one notices). What I found funny last year is that a lot of the stuff I know was correct, no one believed was right.

Yay for writing! Isn't it odd that the least believable historical tidbits are the most likely to be true?

It's never about being right. It's about being credible.

Barry is credible. Mac? Not so much. I could put Baz in a story, wholesale; Mac, I'd never get away with.

(Barry says hi.)

My magic pirate story turned into a historical fantasy instead of a generic one and I've found prety much the same. Real stuff doesn't always sound as credible as fiction. But blending real stuff with fiction seeme to work just fine.
