Best Christmas present evah!
In Desdaemona, one of the main characters, Jordan, describes what he wears around his neck:
The plaque looks like a Nordic rune, except that it isn't in any of the
futharks. I told you, I've spent way too much time in libraries.
Futharks are the runic alphabets, and yes, I can read them.
Draw a figure-of-eight, only with straight lines, flat at top and
bottom. You can do it with four strokes, yes? Top, bottom, two diagonals
intersecting at the midpoint. Good. Put a dot in the middle of the upper
segment.
There. That's my talisman, my charm. That's what kept me young, poised
for ever one day short of my eighteenth birthday: that design, drawn in
clay. It's not a figure of eight with a dot in it, it's a stylised
hourglass with one grain of sand remaining. Poised for ever, one moment
short of the fall.
It's 11.59 on the clock of the world, and the clock is standing still.
