I can haz sandals!
J came over last night and told me to try on her sandals of infinite perfection, which I did, and found them good, so Chaz and I went to the shoe store and bought some tonight. They are lovely. As we were waiting at the edge of the parking lot to turn onto El Camino, directly in front of us an old van did a slow-motion crumple against a car, while slightly ahead of it another car with an obvious dent waited beside the road. It was odd, because the front of the van just...crumpled, with bits falling off. The driver wasn't hurt, just confused, and the car it was crumpling against drove off the road (as you're supposed to, to make way for traffic). We hadn't seen anything useful and the driver got out of the van OK, so we left the growing crowd of gawkers helpers and came home. With new sandals.

One time my husband and I were driving in Seattle and a little Triumph ran his red light right in front of us. My clearest memory after the crash is that pieces kept falling off the Triumph while we all waited for the police, and even after they got there. Our sturdy Ford had a broken headlight and a little dent in front. Nothing fell off our car.
Those were the days of sturdy American-made cars. Not so now!
