I have an issue with Apple's birthday calendar. It's built in, and it automatically adds any birthday from your Contacts to the birthday calendar. There's no way to turn that function off except by removing the birthday info from your Contacts.

This may sound like a great feature, except sometimes it's...unsettling. I get birthday reminders of ex-boyfriends, which is embarrassing. Family members who I really should have called a long time ago, which is embarrassing and makes be feel guilty. Then there are my friends, my dear, dear friends, who I can't call anymore.

My birthday calendar tells me that tomorrow is Coke Brown's 50th birthday, and I would so dearly love to celebrate it with him.

Coke's father was a psychology professor at Idaho State University (and was also named Coke). Coke Senior knew Roger Fouts, the man who taught Washoe the chimpanzee sign language. This is a picture of a very young Coke with Washoe.

Coke was double-jointed in the shoulders, and could twist his arms around into interesting positions. He was also born in the year of the dragon.

Coke was gay. When he was something like 21 he called me up and told me so. "Yup, I know," I told him. "Why didn't you tell me!" was his response. When he went to visit our mutual friend Tracey in New York City, he stopped by the Stonewall Inn.

Coke was a funny, creative, very bright light that snuffed itself out too soon. I miss him. I wish all of my friends could have celebrated their fiftieth birthdays. Happy Fiftieth, Coke.

I have that, too. Suddenly missing someone precious, because of the way programmes are set up. *hugs*
