I went to see Shrek 2 last night, desperate for something light and funny, and laughed out loud for the first time in what seems like forever. Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots was perfect. I now want a Puss in Boots stuffed animal. The ending, however...

I was disappointed that Fiona chose to have her and Shrek changed back to ogres. While I realize that this was to give the message that you should love people for who they are and not what they look like, I felt that it cheapened Shrek's gift of being willing to change his looks to make their marriage successful. If she loves him no matter what he looks like, then having him look human shouldn't matter, either. Shrek's basic personality hadn't changed, they made that clear, just what he looked like. While I realize going to the effort of making the change in the first place was a big gift, still, I didn't like the ending. I suspect I may be the only person who sees it to feel that way, though.

I know what you mean by a mixed message, and I'm not sure what would have ended up satisfying me more. Shrek was clearly uncomfortable being human and handsome, possibly Fiona-as-ogre is more =comfortable= for her, it may be closer to her essential nature. (One wonders what it does to the genetics to have a frog for a father....)

All that said, I'd have liked to see Shrek remain human longer, so that he'd be giving it a fair try. Surely someone somewhere is writing a fanfic story about this....

And what you said about Banderas -- he really is a gifted comic actor, but he's rarely got to show that off in his English-language work!
