John M. Ford proposed a "Talk Like Dr. Stephen Maturin Day", and I thought, "How does one talk like Stephen?" Then today, I caught myself saying, "Never in life," and knew.
He and Jack Aubrey are the main characters in the Master and Commander books (alas, there are only 20 of them). The books take placeduringduring the Napoleonic wars, and follow the careers and personal lives of Jack Aubrey as he rises through the ranks of the British Navy, and his good friend Dr. Stephen Maturin, Naturalist, ship's physician, and covert operative.
The books start when Jack and Stephen meet (and it's hate at first sight), and go on to follow their lives and relationships. I think the first book is the weakest, and it's pretty good. The stories are written in a pretty darn good facsimile of appropriate period writing style. I like to think of them as "Jane Austen for boys" (yes, yes, I know that's sexist, but I think that you'll see what I mean, if you check them out. Which I heartly reccomend. :)
