White men named Mike

klwilliamsIt seems to be a theme in my work life that white men named Mike get promoted far beyond their ability to actually do their work, or get assigned to work on projects far above their IQ level, simply because they are white men named Mike. Somehow being white men named Mike seems to instill in their bosses some sense that they are competent, because so far they haven't been. I could understand this to some extent at Fujitsu, where the Japanese businessmen in charge of our branch of the company were so different culturally from the rest of us that they had to grasp at *something* to make their decisions, but at my current company it's just stupid. But so are most of the policies here.
As you might have guessed, I'm grumpy. I've been sick since Sunday night, and I don't have sick days (see earlier comment about policies). Also, it's a bad idea to go to aikido when you're sick, but an even worse idea to skip class the week before your black belt test. After class last night, I had the pre-asthma-attack wheeze for a couple of hours (but, thank God, no asthma attack).
