I just finished reading one of my favorite books from my childhood, finished it the same way I always finish it, sobbing my eyes out. It's The Chestry Oak, a wonderful story about a little Hungarian prince during WWII, and how he survived when his life was turned completely around. It's the story of good people, solid people, and how they act, and hope, and all sorts of sappy sentimental things. It's the first place I encountered the concept that "nothing fine and noble shall ever perish from this earth so long as there are hearts to remember it." I just love this book. I'd recommend getting a copy, at least for your favorite ten-year-old (that seems to be the perfect age to read this), but it's out of print.

by Kate Seredy! I remember that one. Her The White Stag was one of my favorites. I think I have a copy in one of my bookcases. She had quite an impact on me as a teenager.
