Great weekend
Oct. 31st, 2005 04:53 pmI had an especially full and interesting (at least to me) weekend.
My past weekend started with aikido on Friday night, my first full class in almost two months. It was great, until the next morning, when I could barely walk. This wouldn't have been such a big deal except I had a golf lesson at 3:15. I explained to the golf pro that I was really sore, and why.
"What belt are you?"
"Black?"
"First dan?"
"Yes."
"I have two black belts."
In shotokan and tae kwon do, as it turns out. Suddenly, his opinion of my changed from fat middle-aged woman to fellow martial artist. He changed from talking about my back swing ("You've got that down just fine") to how to get the most snap and power from turning my hips. Cool.
Saturday night I put on my second costume of the season (the first was on Friday for work -- I wore my Renn Faire dress and a plastic crown and came as the Queen. Of everything.). I decided to be an eighties rocker wannabe, which involved a cool shirt, a tux jacket worn with the sleeves rolled up and small buttons on the lapel, and cool earrings. I also wore makeup, because the early eighties look I was going for was proto-Goth, which meant pale makeup. I don't think I managed pale enough, but I discovered I look good in makeup. (Well, duh.) I'll have to wear it again sometime, when I have time to put it on.
The aikido party was fun, though the sensei and another friend of mine kept getting into deeply geeky discussions about "Smallville". I went to
aimeric and
wufmew's party afterwards, which was full of cool people in interesting costumes, too. Then I went home and forgot to set my clock back.
On Sunday
acanthusleaf and I went to the Bridge School benefit concert at Shoreline, where we had lawn seating. (Fortunately, they rented tiny lawn chairs.) We got there in the early afternoon, where we were way in the back, but the music was good and the company great, so we kicked back and relaxed.
We saw Los Lobos, who mostly played gringo songs but were still good. Emmylou Harris sang, and did duets with a couple of the others. Bright Eyes played, and I liked their band, which had a nice Irish sound to it, but their main singer wasn't terribly good, and their songs were more like angst dirges. Sweet Charlotte played, and I really liked them. It was just the two brothers, sans band. They did a trilogy of songs, about their father, their mother, and I assume themselves as kids, which were all very sweet, and, I'm given to understand, totally unlike their usual punk rock show. Norah Jones was beautiful, and had a beautiful voice.
The special surprise guest was Jerry Lee Lewis, who must be close to seventy, but who could still rock. He played several songs, including "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shaking Going On". I wonder what it must be like, having audiences demand the same songs for fifty years.
Dave Mathews was there, sans band, though he brought guitarist Tim Reynolds, who was great. Dave Mathews seemed like a sweet person, and has a great smile. His voice was shot from whatever he had done the night before, so he made up for what he called "squeaking at you" with great guitar duets with Tim Reynolds, who was incredible on a guitar.
We only heard part of the first song from Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, even though we both really like them, because it had gotten so very late and cold, and because
acanthusleaf needed to catch her train back. Fortunately, that meant we missed what would have been horrendous traffic leaving the concert site.
It was a great weekend, and I'm tired but happy.

Date: 2005-11-01 04:23 am (UTC)Yes, the concert was great. I still wish that all the bands had played more upbeat stuff rather than the bluesy songs that were almost the entire show, but as so many of the artists didn't have their whole band with them, they did fantastically well with guitar-and-voice blues. That doesn't include Jerry Lee, who absolutely rocked! Hope I get around that well when I'm his age.
That other band was Good Charlotte, and they sang very well for a couple of young punks with tattoos. :-)
Gads, I feel old. :-)
