The last couple of days have been themed Sleeping Late and Preparing for Chaz. Given that Chaz first saw my house three days after I moved in, so it was filled almost entirely with cardboard boxes, and he still came back to visit, you'd think that preparing for his visit wouldn't be something to worry about. But. Well. Anyway, yesterday [livejournal.com profile] acanthusleaf came over and helped me fix some things around the house and put together my new bookcase/cabinet. By "helped me" I mean "did most of it herself", because she's really the tool user of the two of us. The bookcase looks great, and now I have more space to put the things that are still in boxes.

Today I spent sleeping very late (see Theme 1) and shopping (see Theme 2). I learned some interesting things in the course of visiting Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They do in fact sell duvets. ("Duvet" is French for "down" in the sense of "duck feathers". I would feel more foolish about not knowing this before except that one of the few sentences I can say in French translates to "I don't know how to speak French.") They call the duvets they sell "down comforters" but these aren't the down comforters I'm used to, which makes me feel slightly less stupid. However, these duvets are darned expensive, so I didn't pick any up. Now that I know what I'm looking for I can budget for them. Also, I'm allergic to down, but the ones they have claim that they are allergy-free, and the saleswoman said they are seriously scrubbed to remove anything that hints of an allergen, so I'll probably be OK sleeping with one.

For duvets, try IKEA first. They have a much wider selection of weights and styles and many of them are quite affordable.

Downy feathers produce allergens when they dry out and disintegrate. IE, scrubbing only works for a little while.

I have been using various polyester duvets for years since I hate making beds, and I lie on mine all the time which crushes down but not the feathers of those cute little polys. I get mine from Ikea, if that helps -- decent prices and rated for how warm they are. (Being menopausal, I use the summer weight rated 1 in the winter, adding an extra throw for below-freezing nights, and a thin coverlet in summer.)

You know he's coming to see you, not the house, right?.....

At least we will be able to appreciate the food porn!

I think I'm going to try Ikea next. Polyester is safer, and probably a lot cheaper.

Well, yeah. And the sun. :-)

Three decades after we moved in, the house is still pretty full of cardboard boxes, and yet guests keep coming back - food, wine and company trump good housekeeping, it seems. (Though I'd better wash the floor before D. arrives on Wednesday...)

Probably wiser to stick to polyester. Feathers cannot be trusted to stay non-alergenic.

I doubt Chaz will see the boxes.
