The way of things here

My boss took me and a co-worker out to lunch for my birthday. I noticed during the meal that he wasn't looking at me. I wondered why, and found out on Friday, when I got laid off. I wonder if he'd intended to lay me off earlier, but didn't because of my birthday. Anyway. I got a reasonable (for Silicon Valley) layoff package, and I immediately signed up for unemployment. I've started contacting people that can help with my job hunt. It helps (or maybe hurts) that I'm an expert in electronic discovery search and review. We'll see.

Since Silicon Valley's booming -- or at least booming in your region, why the downsizing?

Were you given any hint as to that?

It's a damned shame.

Love, c.

It's business issues, nothing to do with me in particular.

Never ever thought it had anything to do with you per se, because YOU!

Business.

Much sympathy from me and Howard.

Sorry to hear that. It's never a good experience, even if the severance package is ok. Best wishes on the hunt!

Best wishes and sympathy.

Well, crap. I hope you find something closer to home this time.

A form of musical employments seems to be the norm for Silicon Valley folk. My son-in-law never seems to stay in a job more than 2 - 3 years. I know that doesn't help with the bad feeling from being laid off but hopefully you will soon find a better and position, closer to home.

Best of luck.

Good hunting!

As you say, the way of things. Not a good way, but the one we have. I was surprised you didn't have a term of notice, but hope the layoff package goes some way to make up for that.

Meanwhile, make the most of not doing the commute and not getting up so early (cats permitting)!

Very rarely does anyone have any notice of layoffs. For one thing, that would give people time to get revenge on the company from the inside (delete information or break systems). I have lots of admin passwords, for example, though I'd never do anything to hurt the company. In fact, I'm worried that they won't fix some of the things I was working on to get fixed up.

Folks not looking you in the eye is always a dead giveaway. Hope you find something you like soon.

Certainly. Thank you.
