I bought an iPod mini today. It's blue. I'm so excited.

Just make sure not to get rid of your CDs or the MP3s on your computer. As far as I can tell, there is no way to transfer the music OFF from your iPod once it is there. ALL of my music (30,000 songs, app.) is now on my iPod, and I sold the CDs to Half-Price Books, so if my iPod goes kaput, so does my entire music collection.

If anyone knows better than this, PLEASE let me know. The iPod is wonderful otherwise.

Not true, per the instructions in the iPOD mini manual I have (which of course is at home, not at work so I can't reference it).

Have you looked into the user guide updates over on apple.com?

Hi, Dani! That's good to know about being able to backup songs from your iPod. Also, are you sure your iPod isn't fuchsia?

Could be, could be. Hmmmm. LOL either way, I love mine!

Oh, and since I'm now at home, the user manual says "[when you connect it to your computer] iTunes updates the iPod mini music library to match the songs & playlists in your computer's music library, ... deleting songs from the iPod mini that aren't in your music library."

I did that last night (changed my mind on what I want on it) and works great. All of my music files are off of CDs (rather than downloaded from Napster or iTunes), so I don't know if you could move them out of your library to keep them on your HD somewhere without having them downloaded to your iPod.

You should be able to move the physical files elsewhere as they are all in a directory. I've had to manually link other audio files and audiobooks not initially imported into iTunes into the library and have been able to do so.

As to the issue of downloading off the iPod... it does only seem to go the one way. iPod is brought up to date to match whatever the computer contains. As mentioned above, I'm not aware of a preference to tell the computer to copy the iPod and make the computer match those contents.

Actually, I just figured it out. You have to enable the iPod to be used as a hard drive or set it to "manual" instead of "automatic" for file updates, and then it appears as a drive under "my computer" in Windows, and then just copy and paste the files.

Unfortunately, it doesn't store them on the iPod in any discernable order, so finding and copying what I want is going to involve some work. Maybe I can use the search function for Windows.

Also, I said I had forty gig. I don't. I have twenty.
